Bob von Hellens flew a really nice contest to take top honors and the Marion C. Cruce championship trophy.

Per Ardua for 1998 went to Mark Keene who also placed second in the contest.

Kevin Cullis came in third place over all.

1st place Team (McNeil/Cuny trophy) went to Marvin Willis and Fred Steadman.
The Shaws were the second place team.
Third team was Hank Claybourn and Steve Michalik.

President’s Trophy for fasted speed on a speed task went to Pat Tuckey for something over 55 mph.

Marvin Willis was the Old Toad.

Bill (Clayton) Vicland was the Old Goat.

Larry Neal won the David C. Johnson trophy for highest placer at 1st 1-26 Championships.

Jayne Reid won the Virginia Schweizer women’s trophy. She flew a really good contest!

At least two of the field (Mark Keene and Bob von Hellens) got away before
heavy rains soaked HIAP and forced most of the contestants to land back.
At least eight relaunched for an attempt at the task of Lovinton airport and
return (34 miles), none of this “second wave” completed the task.

Day 2 is now history, and Hobbs’ continued poor soaring conditions again reigned.
No one finished what seemed a reasonable 72.82 mile speed task. Bob von Hellens
won the day with a stellar performance of 51.95 miles. Four stalwarts went 39.30 miles:
Bill Vickland, Jayne Reid, Kevin Cullis and Pete Vredenburg. The conditions were
sufficiently daunting that six ships chose (forced?) not to compete.

Hello, all you 1-26 fans! If you saw us struggling, you might be glad you
stayed home. And, yes (Virginia), it does occasionally rain at Hobbs!
All who attempted the task got caught out. Pat Tuckey won the day,
followed closely by Mark Keene. Kevin Cullis has been one of the more
consistent pilots, placing third both in today's and cumulative standings.
Bob von Hellens remains in first place cumulatively, but placed fourth for
the day. Fifth for the day was Marvin Willis. Charles Shaw finished in 6th today.

I think I mentioned we had rain yesterday. Most of it apparently fell right in the vicinity of the airport. Today we were in a big blue hole with lovely-looking cu in about a ten-mile circle all around us. Tantilizing, but realistically out of reach of 1-26s, for the immediate area was weak, weak, weak. Practically the whole field took at least two tows. At about 14:35, CD, Charlie Spratt, read the handwriting on the wall and cancelled the day. In my opinion, he had no other choice for fair competition.

The weather at Hobbs definitely improved today. Charlie Spratt called a 123.86 mile
task from Hobbs to Andrews to Intersection 180/303 and back to Hobbs. Five speed
finishers with Bob von Hellens blistering at 45.21 mph and Pat Tuckey a close second at
44.76 mph. The soaring to Andrews was reported to be very good, but the rest of the
task required a dramatic shift down-shifting of gears.

Everyone who attempted today’s task finished with speed points.
Pat Tuckey posted a speed of 55.04 mph over a 101.21 mile-course to Andrews and back.
He was followed closely by Mark Keene whose speed was 54.03 mph. Bob von Hellens
placed third with a speed of 52.81. All pretty amazing, and proof Hobbs’ weather
has definitely improved, although there were contestants who had trouble finding
good lift over the airport, and getting high enough to make a satisfactory start.
The lift around Andrews was excellent with cloud bases in the vicinity of 11,500.
It took a whole lot longer getting to Andrews, bucking a 10 kt head wind, than returning.
Charlie Spratt made a lot of people happy today with what I think was an excellent task call.

The air over Hobbs’ airport was stable for the most part today, and most of the field of 1-26s
were unable to stay up in 15/18 mph wind.

It’s all over but the shouting (and griping about the weather). Today was won by Jayne Reid!!
She and Mark Keene were the only finishers on a 115.52 mile task to Eunice, Andrews, Oasis Gin,
and Hobbs. Again, Mother Nature intervened quite forcefully. It was a real struggle to get
high enough to go through the start gate, and then she decided to pour at the third turn point,
which brought down most of the contestants.
