04/29/07 - Arrival Day
Sunday....arrival day at Chilhowee. Sweet, awesome, cool, groovie,
smooth...real smooth. Still getting some climb at 8 PM. I have never been to
the Ridge, now I never want to leave the Ridge. 27 gliders at Chilhowee. I took
a tow at 1830 and popped off near the ridge and climbed to 5900 MSL. Flew up
and down the ridge....so this is what these guys from New Jersy have been
talking about. Turned to the valley and flew 100 down till it was time to land.
Not bad for that late in the day. Many of the guys flew for several hours
today. Its very docile and smooth flying. First practice day is Monday.
Chilhowee is a very classic grass strip barn hanger glider port.

04/30/07 - Practice Day 1
Meetings completed this evening..rules meeting done. I saw Kevin Ford this
morning and he got out early on Sunday and flew 6 hours and over 200 miles. Irn
Jousma also had a great flight and saw an 8 knot thermal.
Today (Monday) most of us took a tow to get a look around the area. We all
spent most of the time around the ridge again in a thermal that took us up to
5800. One gaggle was fun with 8 1-26s in it just over the ridge. A few pressed
into the the valley and it was pretty smooth again. We had a few landouts. It
was an OK day to just go through the motions and get your glider ready to fly.
Tuesday will be practice day #2 and we hope to get a task in.
Pilot meeting at 0930.

05/01/07 - Practice Day 2
Well the day started out sort of like yesterday. We sat around until 1400 and
launched anyway. The pilots hit the ridge and it was not pumping like the last
two days. However it seems if you backed off about a 1/4 mile to the west the
thermals were booming. We all pretty much got up to 6000 and departed on the
task out to Big Spring. I felt it was sort of iffy in light sink and flew to
the first radius and turned for home. A few guys made it over to this big
industrial complex and got a big one up to 6000 again. At about this time we
had one land out at Hardwick Airport. Then the pack procedured south to TP
Rostex. At last report I have been told that 5 finished the task with Tom
Barkow in the lead but this is just a prelim. The Master of scorekeepping Tom
Pressley just rolled in and will now have scores for Tuesday. Contest Day one
is next. I hope the rain stays in Dallas for a few more days.

05/02/07 - Contest Day 1
Pilot meeting complete and today looks
like yesterday except it may close out early with the two fronts approaching.
Kevin Ford was the quasi declared winner for the practice day having flown
about 70 miles. He had some low points and saved himself with a boomer just
past the first turnpoint. Then he had great lift to point 2 and home. The PW-5s
had all but one land out due to their task being much further. Young Sarah
Anderson is in the house and will be running the retrieve desk. Chilhowee is a
classic soaring site with a huge grass stip, old barn and nice meeting cabin.
Check out the website for some pictures of the location.

05/03/07 - No Contest Day
Sorry I am a little behind sked on the contest report. Day 1 turned out pretty
good with Ford winning. My partner flew but I can give you some of the comments
by pilots. Most got out Ok with a few relights. The pack left the ridge at
6-7K. Most headed north and then the decision time came. Run the ridge or head
out into the valley to fly south. Both were tried but it seems the winners were
in the valley. You can see the scores on the SSA website. Tom wil get them oper
here soon.
Day 2...good meeting and then we manned the grid and waited for the CD to start
the launch. The sky was overcast with some blue sections moving around. At
around 1430 some good looking flat bottom black clouds were forming. The PW5s
launched and we followed. During the launch an area of rain started forming off
to the the SW. Pilots were doing pretty good on the ridge waiting for the task
to open. The rain came over the field and the PWs cancelled the tasks and we
soon cancelled the launch. Everyone made it back fine. Many of us sat under the
wings and when the rain passed we put the gliders away. This gave us a chance
to conduct the 1-26 Assoc Annual meeting. I announced the winners of the per
ardua award for 2006. We have awarded Jay McDanial and Kevin Ford to share the
award this year for their work on the Sweepstakes. Dinner tonight at the field.
Fried chicken.

Day 2 debrief. 6 finishers with Bob Hurni winning the day. Yours truley came in
third which is a new high for me. We had many landouts and returns to the
filed. I will tell you about my flight. Off tow went straight up to 5000 AGL
and headed west following Marvin Willis. Marvin and I worked some nice thermals
dropping to 3000 AGl during the search. Vern came in on one and I enjoyed
watching an 81 year old with us at cloud base. Next thermal Marvin zoomed up
and left and I lost him. We were both heading to TP Georgetown and I never saw
him. I hit the TP and there was a nice dark cloud over the lake to the north
and it was a good one. Back up at 5000. I left it heading for home and started
a descent to about 2800 AGL. I looked down and saw Marvin and Von Hellens in a
field. This spooked me a little and I found a 2 knotter and worked it for about
20 minutes and finally connected and went back to 4000. I pressed home still a
little low for final glide and joined Hurni in a good one just a few miles from
the filed.
Day #3 looks good with Ford the WX guy telling us to expcet a blue day light
East winds and thermals to 9000K. We have a TAT with a 3 hour minimum time. The
sniffer just left so I am outta here to help my teammate launch..
Norm
05/07/07 - Canceled Day
Day #3 attempt. Well the weather did not hold out as forecast. We never got the
temps high enough. Things seems to be going well with the grid launch and we
were just geting a few relights. The task was opened and the sky was filled
with a line of 1-26s heading for the first turnpoint. Soon Hurni was calling
low north of the field. Not a good sign. I could see a nice gaggle in a thermal
west of the field and they seemed to be getting out on task. I walked down to
see Tammie Anderson taking phone calls. Vickland, Von Hellens, Barkow,
Ford..the entire sky was dropping gliders. Cathy Williams was the only pilot to
finish the task, nice job Kathy. Jeff Daye came close however landed out just
short of finishing. It looks like a No Contest day. We have two days left to
get this Champs complete. it is supposed to be warmer on Tuesday...better
conditions.....please.
Norm
A 3-h Turn Area Task was called, but it looks as if it may have been a bit
ambitious. Nearly the entire field has landed out, and there is a steady stream
of trailers leaving the airport. It seems likely that there will not be a
sufficient number of competitors achieving minimum distance to make a contest
day.

05/08/07 - No Contest Day
Another tough day at the Championships. So far even though we stayed out for
quite awhile it looks like another No Contest day. Some great epic flights
however 30% of the starters must complete 30 or more miles and we did not get
this. So far Tom Barkow is the top flyer today. We need a good day on Wed to
get a contest.....It should be hotter...anyway inspite of the way the days are
going, we are getting a lot of flying in and having fun with the many great
social events each evening that the Anderson's and Sarah set up.

05/08/07 - Contest Day 3
Well many of us are now arriving home. The Awards brunch was well attended and
we enjoyed many laughs along with the fellowship over a nice meal. First I
would like to congratulate our super newsletter editor for his second YARDSTICK
award. It is prestigious and Craig, I am sure is very happy. The Goats, Toads
and Buzzards are listed below. Pat and Vern were only 2 months apart at 81
years. Maybe next year Vern. Paul Rehm was really excited when he won the David
Johnson (high score/first contest). Kathy Williams not only was the solo
finisher one day (non contest day), she also achieved a personal goal and has
been awarded the Virginia Schweizer Trophy. She was very touched to have earned
this award. Sarah Kelly flew well and picked up the John Green (best score
under 30 years). Of note is the President’s Trophy. This is indicative of how
hard we worked to finish the contest due to the weaker conditions. Kevin Ford
flew a 29.8 MPH Presidents which is about 10-15 MPH slower than most of the
previous winners. Even so Kevin’s skill was apparent since he flew faster than
the rest of us. Ted Beckwith purchased #021 in Feb 07 at the SSA convention and
worked hard to clean her up and added many nice touches grabbing him the 07
Spiffy. Thanks Tom and Harry for all the great work.

Now for the final results. Jeff Daye flew a consistent contest and earned top
honors as the 2007 Champion. Jeff has been instrumental in Association
organization and was a real social spark at the contest. It is nice to see a
new young Champion. Kevin Ford was in the top group coming in second with his
methodical method of winning contests. The gentleman of the 1-26s, Bob Hurni
finished up with third.
Team flying was closely contested with the Anderson/Kelly team just taking the
lead over Denaples/Schwartz by a mere 36 points. We are talking seconds or less
than 1/4 mile between these teams. Bourbeau/Miller came in with the third place
team award.

We have been thanking TEAM Anderson’s Kevin, Tami and Sarah along with Sarah
Kelly all week for the great contest they organized. It was their wonderful
Tennessee hospitality that made this contest fun. We are blessed to have such a
great organization and safe group of pilots and crews. Have a great summer
soaring season and start making plans for TSA 2008 21 July.
