2001 1-26 Championships

It’s not mentioned on the other scoresheets, so I’ll list here the winners of the various special-category travelling trophies:

• The Marion C. Cruce Trophy, awarded to the individual pilot with the highest final score: Bob von Hellens.
  
• The Bob McNeill/Fred Cuny memorial team trophy: Pat DeNaples and Bob Root.
  
• The President’s trophy, for the fastest flight of the contest: Clayton Vickland, for his 38.98mph flight on Day one.
  
• The OLD GOAT trophy, for the highest daily average by a competitor over the age of 60: Pat DeNaples.
  
• The David C Johnson memorial trophy, for the pilot with the highest daily average, flying in the championships for the first time: Jack Steen.
  
• The Virginia M Schweizer trophy was not awarded.
  
• The John P. Greene memorial trophy, for the best performance by a pilot under the age of 30: Brooks Johnson.
  
• The OLD TOAD trophy, awarded to the pilot over the age of 70 with the highest daily average score: Pat DeNaples.
  

Since this is my first time scoring a 1-26 championships, I went by the rules, and tabulated winners for all trophies enumerated in the rules. At the awards breakfast this morning, President Del Blomquist pulled another hat out of the awards box, and announced the Turtle Cap award, to be presented to the pilot who turned in the SLOWEST speed while finishing a task. Since I didn’t have my laptop with the data with me, it was awarded based upon people’s memories. I have to report now that it was awarded incorrectly. Michael, I have to ask you to relinquish the hat, and pass it to John Caldwell of the USAFA, for his 16.24mph flight on Day five. How he managed to stay aloft for 3 hours, 55 minutes, and one second, all the while flying at about half of stall speed, is amazing to me!
